First International Conference on Animal Welfare Education

October 2010

Ruth De Vere and Mariah McConnaughey from the education team at WSPA International attended the First International Conference on Animal Welfare Education in Brussels on 1st-2nd October. The conference was a great success. The plans were for this to be the first of many conferences aimed at educating the citizens of Europe – and the wider world – on animal welfare. It was organised and funded jointly by the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency. The target audience, and the variety of speakers, were designed to cover a broad range of stakeholders representing the thinking behind the subtitle of "everyone is responsible". Ruth's presentation was well received, and pleasingly five other speakers mentioned WSPA’s education work in their presentations independently, indicating that WSPA's work is at the forefront of global animal welfare education. The proceedings from the conference are available from the FAO Gateway to Farm Animal Welfare site.

Publication of the First Concepts in Animal Welfare: For Teachers Resource

September 2010

First Concepts in Animal Welfare is the name of WSPA’s education programme aimed at providing materials and tools to those that will benefit from an introduction to the concepts of animal welfare. This enables introductory messaging about animal welfare to reach diverse audiences who are in need of gaining an understanding of animal needs and welfare, and might include examples such as adults with low literacy levels or adults who lack the knowledge about how to best provide for their animals.  If you would like to request a copy of the education pack, please feel free to email the education team at WSPA.
